Abstract

This article examines the economic foundations underlying the political and military power of the Azerbaijani Atabegs (Eldenizid) state, which existed during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. While most studies emphasize the political history of the dynasty, this research focuses on the region’s economic development trends during the Eldenizid period — particularly on urban planning policy and the expansion of international trade relations. The study systematically analyzes the key economic arteries of the era, including trade routes, the taxation system, centers of craftsmanship, and agricultural production. The findings reveal that the Eldenizids’ deliberate construction and infrastructure policies strengthened economic stability, while a robust economic base enabled the state to attain significant political influence in a short time. Thus, the Eldenizid state effectively utilized its favorable geographical position to establish economic hegemony, which became one of the decisive factors ensuring its political continuity and durability.
